Brainwashed by default

“Brainwashing” sounds like something done to prisoners in a locked room. The ordinary version is duller and far more common. You encounter the same claims, images and judgments enough times that they stop registering as claims at all and start feeling like a description of how things are. Nobody has to coerce you. The exposure does the work.
Advertising has run on this for a century. In 1972 Herbert Krugman published “Why three exposures may be enough,” and the industry’s entire vocabulary of reach and frequency grew from the same premise: what moves people is not the strength of an argument but the number of times they meet it. Nobody remembers being persuaded by a jingle. That is precisely why jingles work.
Media researchers found the same pattern at scale. George Gerbner and Larry Gross described cultivation: heavy television viewers’ sense of how dangerous the world is drifts toward what they watch rather than toward where they actually live. Maxwell McCombs and Donald Shaw described agenda-setting: coverage is less effective at telling you what to think than at deciding what you think about. Neither effect asks for your agreement. Both run on repetition.
The laboratory findings underneath are older and simpler. Robert Zajonc showed that repeated contact with something — a shape, a word, a face — is enough on its own to increase liking for it, with no argument attached. Hasher, Goldstein and Toppino showed that repeated statements come to feel truer, and Fazio and colleagues later showed that knowing better offers no protection: people rated repeated claims as more true even when they could factually disprove them.
Put those together and the picture is not sinister, just unattended. The mechanism runs constantly, on material you did not select — a feed built to hold attention, a commute of billboards, the phrases your family used about money, the one sentence a manager said years ago that you have replayed several thousand times since. Almost none of it was chosen. Much of it was not even aimed at you.
Which reframes what a tool like this is for. SOMOTE does not open a channel into your head; the channel has been open your whole life, carrying whatever happened to be nearby. It points the same mechanism at sentences you wrote yourself, in a quiet moment, when you actually knew what you wanted to be true. Not freedom from programming. Authorship of it.

Why the mirror never worked, and what does instead

The classic instruction is simple: stand in front of the mirror every morning and say the words like you mean them. Most people who try it stop within two weeks. Not because the words were wrong, but because the practice asks for the two things a difficult morning has least of — time and conviction, produced on demand, every single day.
Look at the arithmetic. A disciplined mirror practice reaches you maybe ten times a day, on the days it happens at all. Research on habit formation led by Phillippa Lally at University College London followed people building simple daily habits and found automaticity took, on average, sixty-six days of consistent repetition — with a range stretching past two hundred. Most affirmation practices never survive long enough to get there.
The deeper problem is that the mirror method makes you the delivery mechanism. On your strongest days that is fine. On the days you most need the words, you are also the person least able to say them convincingly — so the practice quietly punishes you precisely when it should be carrying you.
Ambient repetition inverts the arrangement. The words appear on their own schedule, dozens or hundreds of times a day, whether you feel persuasive or not. No performance is required; presence is enough. Familiarity does its slow work in the background — the way a song you never chose to learn ends up known by heart.
That is the design idea behind SOMOTE: remove effort from the one variable that matters most, the count. You choose the words once, with care. The repetition, from then on, takes care of itself.

The mere-exposure effect, and why familiarity persuades before reasoning does

In 1968, Robert Zajonc published a monograph with an unglamorous title — “Attitudinal Effects of Mere Exposure” — and one of the most durable findings in social psychology. Show people a nonsense word, a Chinese character, a photograph of a stranger’s face, with no reward and no story attached, and simply showing it again makes them like it more. Repetition alone moves preference.
The finding has been replicated across decades, cultures, and stimuli. A 1989 meta-analysis by Robert Bornstein covering over 200 experiments confirmed the effect is real and reliable. It is part of why the songs on heavy rotation grow on you, why an unfamiliar city feels warmer the third week, why brands pay to be merely seen.
The detail most relevant here is the most encouraging one: Bornstein’s analysis found the effect was, if anything, stronger when the exposures were so brief or unattended that people did not consciously recognize the stimulus. Zajonc argued that liking does not need to pass through deliberate reasoning at all — “preferences need no inferences,” as his famous 1980 paper put it. Familiarity persuades below the level of argument, which means the words at the edge of your attention are working even when you are busy with something else.
It also works entirely without your supervision. You do not have to concentrate on the phrase, believe it hard, or catch every appearance. The mechanism asks one thing only — that the words keep showing up — and that is precisely the part a screen is better at than a person.
Some set of words is already enjoying heavy rotation in your head. The mere-exposure literature simply says that rotation has effects. Choosing the playlist yourself, and letting the phrases you actually want become the familiar ones, is the closest thing psychology offers to a free lunch — small, steady, and entirely on your side.

Five phrases worth starting with

The most common mistake is starting too wide — a dozen phrases covering money, health, confidence, love, and focus all at once. Repetition is the mechanism, and repetition divided twelve ways is thin. Begin with five phrases or fewer, aimed at one season of your life, and let them run for a month before you edit.
A phrase earns its place by feeling right in your own voice. “I am calm under pressure” survives a hard day; so does “I am seen and loved deeply.” Research by Ethan Kross and colleagues suggests even small grammatical shifts change how words land — talking to yourself by name or as “you” creates a useful sliver of distance, which is why “You handle hard things well” can sit even easier than a first-person claim.
There is also power in the question form. A study by Ibrahim Senay and colleagues found people solved more puzzles after writing “Will I?” than after writing “I will” — the interrogative seems to invite your own reasons rather than demand compliance. “What if this works out?” is a legitimate phrase, and often a delightful one.
Five starting points, then, to steal or rewrite: I am seen and loved deeply. I always follow through. I am always in a growth mindset. You have handled every day so far. What if it goes well? Notice the range — a claim, a commitment, an identity, an evidence, a question. Different shapes reach different moods.
Set them small and quiet at first — low opacity, unhurried frequency — and resist the urge to fiddle. The point of this practice is that it asks nothing of you after the writing. Write once, carefully. Then let the count do what counting does.

What a 15-minute classroom exercise taught psychology about belief

In 2006, the journal Science published an experiment that sounded too small to matter. Seventh graders spent fifteen minutes writing about a value that was important to them — family, music, friendship — or, in the control group, a value that wasn’t. Geoffrey Cohen and his colleagues then simply watched the semester unfold.
For African American students, who faced the extra headwind of negative stereotypes about their group’s ability, the brief writing exercise measurably reduced the racial achievement gap in grades — and follow-up work found effects persisting for years in some cohorts. A quarter of an hour of remembering who you are, changing an academic trajectory.
The theory underneath is Claude Steele’s self-affirmation theory, from 1988: people are motivated to maintain a sense of overall self-integrity, and when one part of the self is under threat, reaffirming a different, valued part restores enough security to stop the threat from compounding. The affirmation doesn’t argue with the threat. It makes the threat smaller by making the self bigger.
Cohen and David Sherman’s 2014 review of the field describes how these small affirmations work best exactly where they are needed most — under real pressure, at moments when a setback could otherwise start a downward spiral. Values-affirmation exercises have since been applied to exams, health decisions, and workplace stress, with the same recursive logic: interrupt the spiral early, and the benefit compounds the way the threat would have.
That is a finding about mechanism, and it is why phrases anchored in your values (“My family matters more than this meeting”) often outwork phrases about outcomes. The self that remembers what it loves is measurably harder to rattle.
A fifteen-minute essay is one delivery system for that mechanism. A phrase that returns to you, quietly, forty times a day, is another.

Building Deep Mode

Deep Mode shows your phrase for seventeen milliseconds, once every seven seconds. Both numbers were argued over, so this is the record of why they won.
Seventeen milliseconds is one frame on a common 60-hertz display. Any shorter and the operating system cannot reliably draw it; much longer and the flash crosses into something you consciously read, which is a different experience — that is what the ordinary motions are for. One frame is the shortest presentation a real desktop can honestly promise, so that is the number. On faster monitors we hold the duration rather than the frame count, because the promise is about time, not hardware.
Perception research has studied presentations in this range for decades: stimuli this brief typically slip beneath conscious identification, yet the visual system registers them — work by researchers like Sid Kouider and Stanislas Dehaene has traced how much processing happens in that silent window. A single frame sits right at the edge of awareness, which is exactly where Deep Mode is meant to live: present enough to count, quiet enough to never interrupt.
Seven seconds is the humbler number. Flash too often and the flicker itself becomes noticeable as rhythm, which defeats the point. Too rarely and the daily count collapses. Seven seconds yields several hundred quiet repetitions in a working day while staying beneath the threshold where testers reported noticing a pattern.
One number we did not negotiate: safety. Subliminal priming: the conditions under which it works

The laboratory version of a subliminal message is precise: a word flashed too briefly to consciously read, sandwiched between masks, while researchers measure what changes afterward. Over the past three decades, that careful setup has produced a body of quietly remarkable findings.
Studies by Ap Dijksterhuis, Henk Aarts, and colleagues found that flashing achievement- and goal-related words beneath awareness nudged people to work harder and perform better on subsequent tasks. Johan Karremans showed that subliminal exposure to a drink brand increased people’s likelihood of choosing it — among people who were thirsty. Erin Strahan and colleagues titled their paper on the phenomenon “striking while the iron is hot”: primes worked when they aligned with a motive the person already held.
Perhaps the most striking result came from Brian Lowery and colleagues in 2007: students subliminally primed with intelligence-related words before studying went on to score higher on a real midterm exam taken days later. The nudge was invisible; the grade was not.
Read together, the literature converges on one condition: the words must connect to something you already want. A hidden message aimed at a stranger’s goal is inert. A message aimed at your own goal — more focus, more warmth, more follow-through — lands on prepared ground. The prime doesn’t install the desire; it turns up the volume on one of yours, at a moment when the volume matters.

Willpower is a poor tool for identity change

Willpower is wonderful at tasks. Finish the report, decline the dessert, make the call. It is remarkably bad at the project people most often aim it at: becoming a different kind of person. You cannot white-knuckle your way into feeling worthy.
What the research consistently favors instead is arranging the world so the desired thing happens without a fight. Wendy Wood’s work on habit finds that roughly forty percent of daily behavior repeats in stable contexts, running on cues rather than decisions. Angela Duckworth and colleagues have shown that situational strategies — changing what surrounds you — outperform in-the-moment restraint. The people who look disciplined are mostly people whose environments do the disciplining.
Identity change responds to the same logic. The self-image is not argued into a new shape; it is worn into one, by what it encounters over and over. Which means the practical question is not “how hard can I push?” but “what does my environment repeat at me all day?” For most of us the honest answer is: notifications, news, and our own recycled worries.
Changing that repertoire is a one-time act of effort with a long tail — the kind of trade willpower is actually good at. Choose the words once. Put them where your day already happens. Then let the environment, for once, work in your favor.

Helping kids understand that ability grows

Carol Dweck’s research career orbits one question: what do people believe intelligence is? Some children carry a “fixed” theory — ability is a verdict, revealed by performance. Others carry a “growth” theory — ability is a starting point, changed by work. Her studies found the two groups inhabit different worlds after failure: the first hides from challenge because every stumble testifies against them; the second leans in, because a stumble is just information.
The most practical finding in the literature is about praise. In a famous 1998 series of studies, Claudia Mueller and Dweck praised children after a puzzle either for being smart or for working hard. The “smart” group went on to choose easier puzzles, enjoy them less, and lie more about their scores; the “effort” group chose harder puzzles and kept improving. A single sentence, repeated across a childhood, teaches a child what ability is.
The effects reach further than a lab session. Elizabeth Gunderson and colleagues recorded parents’ natural praise when their children were one to three years old, then followed up years later: the toddlers who heard more process praise — you worked so hard, you found a good way to do it — held stronger growth beliefs at age seven or eight. And David Yeager’s 2019 national experiment showed that even a one-hour online growth-mindset module reliably improved grades among lower-achieving teenagers. The belief is teachable at every age, and cheaply.
Notice the common mechanism: repetition of framing. No parent delivers one lecture on neuroplasticity and calls it done. The belief is built from hundreds of small sentences — after the spelling test, at the piano, in the car — each one framing ability as something under construction. Children become fluent in whatever language about the self they hear most often. So do adults.
That is worth saying plainly: a growth mindset is a sentence heard enough times to become furniture. “You figured that out” does the work for a seven-year-old. “I am always in a growth mindset” — returning quietly through your own workday — does the same work for the parent. The household vocabulary is the intervention, and you are allowed to write your own entry in it.

Mental hygiene: tending the mind the way you tend the body

Nobody considers toothbrushing a heroic act. It is maintenance — small, daily, and done precisely because you do not want the dramatic version later. The curious thing is that we extend no such routine to the mind, the one instrument involved in absolutely everything else. Mental hygiene is the missing habit category: not therapy, not crisis response, just daily upkeep of the inner environment.
The research on small daily practices is encouraging about how little it takes. In a classic 2003 study, Robert Emmons and Michael McCullough asked people to write down a handful of things they were grateful for once a week; compared to those listing hassles, the gratitude group reported better mood, more optimism, and even fewer physical complaints. Matthew Killingsworth and Daniel Gilbert’s famous iPhone-sampling study of over two thousand people found the mind wandering nearly half of waking life — and that a wandering mind tended to be a less happy one. Where attention rests, mood follows.
So the practical core of mental hygiene is choosing default resting places for attention. A morning page. A walk without the phone. A gratitude note. And — the piece we build — a curated set of words in the visual field, so that when attention drifts, it lands on something chosen rather than something algorithmic. The drift is inevitable; the landing spot is negotiable.
It helps to think in terms of an information diet. You already are what your feeds repeat at you; the average scroll serves alarm because alarm holds attention. Hygiene here is not abstinence but proportion — deliberately adding inputs that point where you want to go, so the day’s repetition budget isn’t spent entirely by other people’s priorities.
Like flossing, none of this is impressive on any single day. That is the point. Hygiene works by being small enough to survive every kind of day — and mental scripting is the most survivable practice we know of, because after the first thoughtful setup, it requires exactly nothing. The mind, like the teeth, mostly asks to be tended a little, often.

Why your surroundings matter more than your resolutions

In 1984, Roger Ulrich published a study in Science with a premise almost too simple to fund: he compared surgical patients whose hospital windows faced a stand of trees with patients whose windows faced a brick wall. The tree-view patients went home sooner and needed less pain medication. Nothing about their treatment differed. Only what they looked at, hour after hour, while healing.
The finding generalizes far beyond hospitals. Marc Berman, John Jonides, and Stephen Kaplan found that a walk among trees measurably restored attention and working memory compared to a city walk — the environment either taxes the mind’s filters or rests them. Wendy Wood’s habit research shows that roughly forty percent of daily behavior is cued by stable contexts rather than decisions. The room you are in is not a backdrop. It is an active participant in what you think, feel, and do next.
What all these literatures share is the mechanism: repeated, low-attention exposure. The patients did not concentrate on the trees. Nobody decides to be cued by their kitchen. Surroundings work on us precisely because we are not defending against them — the input arrives while attention is elsewhere, hundreds of times a day, and accumulates.
Most advice about environment stops at the physical: clear the desk, add a plant, put the guitar on a stand. All good. But the environment you look at most is not the room — it is the screen, which for many of us occupies more waking gaze-hours than any window. It is also the only environment that is fully programmable. The question “what do I want to see out my window all day?” has, for the first time, a literal answer field.
That reframing is the whole invitation. You already live downstream of your surroundings; the research just makes the plumbing visible. Put trees where there was brick. Put your own words where there was noise. Then let the most reliable force in behavioral science — the slow accumulation of what keeps showing up — run in your favor for once.

One month in: what actually shifted

Week one was mostly noticing. The phrases sat at the edge of the screen like a new pair of glasses — technically invisible, practically the only thing I could see. I caught myself reading them deliberately, grading them, wondering if they were working, which is of course the one activity the method is designed to make unnecessary.
Week two, the novelty faded — and with it, nearly my resolve. Not because anything was wrong, but because nothing dramatic was happening, and I had quietly expected drama. I turned the opacity down and let them be. That, it turns out, was the correct move for entirely accidental reasons.
The first real shift arrived in week three and was almost insultingly small. Mid-argument with myself over an email, a phrase surfaced — one thing at a time — in its own typeface, so to speak. Not a voice, not a revelation. Just the sentence, available, the way the chorus of an overplayed song is available. I used it. The email got written.
After that I stopped auditing and the phrases stopped performing. They receded into the furniture of the day, which turns out to be where they work. By week four, two of them had begun preempting their opposites — the old “I’m behind” reflex would start and arrive half-formed, crowded out by wording it no longer had a monopoly against. I did not become a new person in thirty days. The narration changed key, slightly, and it turns out most of a mood is narration.
If I could hand week-one me three notes: expect the shift around week three, and write that down so you don’t quit in week two. Choose one phrase you can already almost believe — it will carry the others. And when you catch yourself checking whether it’s working, remember that you never once checked whether the anxious loop was working. It was. Frequency always is — and now it answers to you.
Vision boards, journaling, and where ambient exposure fits beside them

Every mindset tool is a bargain between effort and effect, and the honest way to compare them is to ask what each one costs on a bad day. Journaling is powerful and costs twenty minutes of attention you may not have. A vision board costs an afternoon once, then quietly becomes wallpaper you no longer see. Meditation costs discipline daily. None of this is a flaw; it is just the price list.
The goal literature offers one great free upgrade for the planning end of the shelf: Peter Gollwitzer’s implementation intentions. Deciding in advance “when situation X arises, I will do Y” roughly doubles follow-through across hundreds of studies. Structure beats inspiration, most days — and a phrase like “I always follow through,” met hundreds of times a day, keeps the identity behind those plans warm.
Ambient exposure earns its place at the cheap end of the price list. It costs one thoughtful writing session, ever, and nothing thereafter — no session to skip, no streak to break. That makes it the only tool in the kit that works on precisely the days the others don’t happen. It will not out-perform a journaling practice at full strength. It will out-attend it.
So the sensible arrangement is a stack, not a swap. Let the phrases hold the baseline — your chosen words, present by default, hundreds of times a day. Journal when you have the twenty minutes. Board the vision when it wants a picture. And let the quietest tool cover everything in between, which is, if we are honest, most of life.

What “subliminal” actually means

“Subliminal” is Latin bookkeeping: sub limen, below the threshold. In perception research it means a stimulus presented below the limit of conscious detection — flashed briefly, or masked, so that you cannot report having seen it even when asked. Below that line, the eyes have stopped telling you what they are still telling the brain.
The threshold itself is not a wall but a dimmer. Psychologists distinguish an objective threshold (you cannot detect the stimulus at better than chance) from a subjective one (you deny seeing it, though your responses show it registered), and researchers like Philip Merikle spent careers mapping the rich territory between them. Perception keeps working well past the point where noticing stops — which is why a phrase can be doing its quiet work at the edge of your screen while you remain entirely absorbed in a spreadsheet.
SOMOTE spans the whole dimmer. A phrase at low opacity in the corner of your vision is low-attention exposure — faint, peripheral, absorbed while you work — the register where the mere-exposure literature found familiarity growing across hundreds of studies, strongest precisely when people weren’t consciously attending. Deep Mode’s single-frame flash reaches down toward the threshold itself, the register the priming laboratories studied directly. Two depths, one mechanism: repetition that doesn’t ask for your time.
One clarification the word deserves: the threshold is not a security gate that hidden messages sneak through. What the research shows is more elegant — messages aligned with what you already want are the ones that land, at any depth. Your own affirmations pass that test by construction. The words are yours, aimed at your own goals; the delivery is simply set to a depth where they can repeat all day without costing you a single glance.
Strip away the mystique and something better remains. Below or beside awareness, the mind absorbs its surroundings all day — it has never needed your full attention to learn what it is steeped in. That absorption has been running your whole life on ambient defaults. The only novelty here is choosing the input.

Why we started building SOMOTE

SOMOTE started with an uncomfortable observation: I knew exactly which thoughts I wanted to think, and had no mechanism for thinking them. The wanting was fully formed. I could write the sentences down — had, in a dozen notebooks. What I lacked was delivery. A belief is not adopted the way a decision is; you cannot sign for it once. It has to arrive many times.
Meanwhile, I noticed, frequency was already being spent — lavishly, just not by me. My screen repeated things at me all day with total reliability: red badges, headlines engineered for alarm, the same five worries in rotation. Everything about my attention environment had a repetition strategy except the person living in it.
The idea was embarrassingly literal. The screen is where my eyes already are for eight hours a day. Put the chosen words there. Not in an app I would have to open — openable apps get closed — but over everything, ambient, at whatever visibility I chose, on a schedule that did not consult my motivation. The first prototype was crude and the effect was immediate in exactly one way: for the first time, my own sentences had a frequency advantage.
The craft since then has been about manners. Words that float over your work must never interrupt it: near-zero footprint, no sounds, no badges, nothing to dismiss. The mechanism underneath is the steadiest one psychology has: repetition shapes familiarity, familiarity shapes preference — and the words on heavy rotation in your head were, until now, chosen by nobody.
That is really the whole company. An aesthetically serious way to give your own words the airtime everything else already gets. We named it SOMOTE and made the foundations free, because the gap it closes — between wanting to think differently and having a way to — should not have a paywall in front of its first step.
